Chelsea ecstatic after huge Newcastle bid accepted, as Eddie Howe puts regular starter on notice

Southampton have accepted a Newcastle bid worth up to £40m for a player whose move will be greeted with cheers at Chelsea.

The Blues have recently seen a £20m bid (potentially rising to £25m through add-ons) accepted for Brighton goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.

However, with a blockbuster swap involving Romelu Lukaku and Dusan Vlahovic under consideration, as well as Moises Caicedo still wanted, big-money moves could still await.

To help fund those deals, a transfer between Southampton and Newcastle is primed to come into play.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano and the Athletic, Southampton have accepted a Newcastle bid for right-back, Valentino Livramento.

More commonly known as ‘Tino’ Livramento, the 20-year-old left Chelsea upon joining the Saints back in 2021. The move set Southampton back just £4m at the time.

However, per the Athletic, the deal contained a significant sell-on clause that works on a sliding scale.

Put simply, the bigger the fee Livramento moves for, the higher the percentage Chelsea are in line to collect.

Any money Chelsea are due only pertains to the profit Southampton make, meaning the first £4m (the fee Southampton paid to sign Livramento) is exempt from the sell-on clause.

As such, news of Southampton accepting Newcastle’s £40m bid (including future add-ons) will be greeted warmly at Stamford Bridge.

Both the Athletic and Romano confirmed the move, as did other outlets including Sky Sports and the Daily Mail.

A medical has now been scheduled and Livramento has agreed personal terms with the Magpies. Romano concluded by giving the switch his signature “here we go” confirmation.

Trippier minutes could be slashed

Livramento featured in just two Premier League matches for Southampton last season while recovering from an ACL injury.

However, he remains a highly-regarded talent nonetheless and Newcastle have swooped for the 20-year-old.

Livramento can deputise at left-back, though his more natural position is right-back.

As such, he’ll now compete with the imperious Kieran Trippier who’ll turn 33 next month. Despite performing to an incredibly high standard last season, it cannot be argued that Trippier is now in the autumn of his career given his advancing age.

With Newcastle back in Europe next term, it stands to reason Eddie Howe will now be able to protect Trippier moving forwards and will have license to chop and change as he sees fit.
