Telling Newcastle update surfaces as La Liga transfer saga begins to crumble

Karim Adeyemi, Diego Carlos

An update has surfaced regarding the Newcastle United interest in Diego Carlos, with Sevilla appearing to block the star from leaving.

The Magpies’ pursuit of Sevilla centre-back Carlos has been well reported of late. The Brazilian reportedly told the Spanish club that he wants to join Newcastle, but they have as yet rejected two bids.

In Newcastle’s current position – 19th in the Premier League – they cannot afford to have this saga continue for much longer. As such, it seems they may turn their attention elsewhere.

The Daily Star reports the Magpies may terminate their interest in Carlos entirely.

That report states Newcastle are frustrated with the lack of progress so far. They are also reportedly receiving mixed messages from Sevilla regarding Carlos.

There have also been reports of a rival Premier League bid for the Brazilian. As such, Eddie Howe’s side may settle for another player, rather than continue their pursuit of the Sevilla man.

However, the Magpies have had attempts to sign a number of top centre-backs knocked back already.

One of which being Sven Botman, as Lille have reportedly rejected two Newcastle bids for the towering defender.

The St James’ Park outfit are clearly desperate to improve their defence, given all the centre-backs they have pursued.

As such, they are not likely to stop trying until they manage to land one.

Carlos among Magpies’ defensive options

While Newcastle may well halt their pursuit of Carlos, they are still pursuing other stars in the defence.

One of the latest talents they are interested in adding to their ranks is Mitchel Bakker of Bayer Leverkusen.

The 21-year-old left-back has contributed to four goals this season,. Furthermore, he seems to be a promising young talent, and a possible upgrade for the Magpies.

Should Newcastle sign both Bakker and Carlos, in addition to Kieran Trippier, they would suddenly have a top defence.
