The race is on to sign Federico Chiesa after a report claimed the Juventus winger is fascinated by the project at Newcastle United.

The Magpies have been linked with numerous players since they managed a superb fourth-place Premier League finish. The Toon Army will witness Champions League football once again in 2023-2024. And manager Eddie Howe is doing all he can to ensure the club competes with the best in Europe.

The ex-Bournemouth chief has brought in some quality additions since moving into the St James’ Park hotseat.

And he has already snapped up defensive midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan this summer.

The 23-year-old is rated as one of the best young Italian players and he may be joined on Tyneside by another.

Chiesa, 25, joined Juve on loan for the 2021-22 season. Labelled world class by Andrea Pirlo, the Italy international scored 14 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions.

His loan deal extended into the following campaign but his season ended in early January 2022 due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Following a lengthy rehabilitation period and after inking permanent terms in Turin, he was back in action in November last year.

However, he enjoyed just six starts among 21 Serie A outings, scoring twice.

Nevertheless a number of top clubs are said to be interested in acquiring his service ahead of the new season.

Suitors circle for Chiesa signature

Liverpool endured a below-par campaign by their recent high standards, missing out on a spot in the Champions League.

However, the Merseysiders remain an attractive proposition for any player.

And it was reported earlier this month that manager Jurgen Klopp had eyes on the Italian as his midfield revamp continues.

There has been no word on any potential offer, however, with Chelsea also entering the picture.

The Blues are thought to be keen as Mauricio Pochettino plots a way back to the top.

Aston Villa were the first to show their hand, however, with a bid in the region of £50m.

The talented wide man gave that offer short shrift as he only wants to play ‘at top clubs’, according to Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

That will not please the Villa faithful but Newcastle, Liverpool, and Chelsea fall into that category.

And it seems as though the man with 42 Azzurri caps has taken note of Newcastle’s interest.

Corriere della Sera are reporting that Chiesa is ‘intrigued by Newcastle’.

The report adds that the north-east outfit have made a proposal, which is under consideration by The Old Lady.

But there may be some way to go before any of the trio can unveil the Genoa-born ace.

Of the three clubs mentioned, only Newcastle United can offer Champions League football and that will be a draw.

As will the fact Tonali is already on board and will be a familiar face for Chiesa should he arrive.
