Eddie Howe tips ‘unlucky’ Newcastle star to ‘take his opportunity’ ahead of crucial Tottenham clash

Eddie Howe insists Matt Targett is still in his plans at Newcastle United, despite the defender’s lack of playing time this season.
The Magpies boss says the left-back has been ‘really unlucky’ but has backed him to take his opportunity when it presents itself.
After signing for Newcastle on loan from Aston Villa last season, Targett played a key role in helping the Tynesiders avoid relegation.
Howe then opted to sign the 27-year-old permanently for £15m last summer, showing how fondly the coach thinks of him.
However, after falling behind Dan Burn in the pecking order, Targett has been limited to just four Premier League starts this term.
Targett also picked up a heel injury which sidelined him for two months – allowing Burn to take his spot in the starting XI.
In fairness, no one can really argue with Howe’s tactical decision-making, with the Magpies currently sitting in fourth place in the table.
With that in mind, Targett could potentially get more opportunities in the future, as Newcastle will have more games to play if they qualify for European football next season.

Howe: Matt has been ‘unlucky’ this year
Since recovering from his injury, Targett has played just 30 minutes in three substitute appearances for Newcastle – but Howe has declared that he will get his opportunity to shine soon.
“Matt is firstly a great lad to work with,” Howe said.
“I’ve really enjoyed coaching him and working with him.
“Last season his effect on the team was undoubted, the role he played in us staying in the division, he had an incredible contribution, hence why we signed him.
“He’s been really unlucky this year. Dan has come in and the team has done so well and I’ve picked a consistent team and back four.
“He’s waiting for his opportunity. I think when he gets it he’ll take it. That’s the game we’re in.”
Despite Howe’s words of encouragement for Targett, the English left-back could have added competition next season.
Indeed, as previously reported by TEAMtalk, Newcastle are considering making a move for Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney. Although, they will face competition from Manchester City for his signature.
The Scotland international made his return to the Gunners line-up in a 2-2 draw with West Ham on Sunday, with Oleksandr Zinchenko ruled out with a groin injury.
With that in mind, Targett could potentially struggle even more for playing time at St. James’ Park next season.
Nevertheless, Howe clearly has no plans to sell the ex-Villa defender, which suggests he will be afforded more opportunities in the future.
For now, the manager’s and Targett’s focus will be on qualifying for the Champions League, with Newcastle set to face Tottenham in a crucial game on Sunday.
