Newcastle brought in Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon in January and could add another big-name midfielder to their ranks this summer, according to a report.

Guimaraes was one of Newcastle’s top targets heading into the winter window. They went on to secure his signature for £40million, with the Brazilian penning a long-term contract on Tyneside.

Guimaraes, 24, made his Newcastle debut against Everton in the Premier League on February 8. Eddie Howe’s side won that game 3-1 to boost their survival hopes.

Howe gradually eased Guimaraes into the team with several substitute appearances. He then opened his Magpies account in a 2-1 victory over Southampton on March 10.

In Newcastle’s most recent outing, Howe went with a midfield three of Guimaraes, Joelinton and Joe Willock. The English manager can also rely on Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff in the centre of the park, while Isaac Hayden is out due to injury.

Despite the strong options in midfield, reports claim Newcastle are looking to add to their squad in the summer.

According to Sport Witness, who cite reports coming out of Spain, Newcastle are keen on Juventus’ Arthur Melo.

Newcastle could be buoyed by star’s experience

The 25-year-old may be a good addition as he has experience playing at the highest level. That includes appearances in La Liga, Serie A and the Champions League.

Newcastle’s hopes are boosted by Juventus’ financial situation. They need to reduce their wage bill and selling Arthur would be a great place to start.

Juve know Newcastle have funds available, putting a summer transfer into sight.

Arthur had been on Arsenal’s radar during January, although the Gunners were unable to agree a deal for the Brazilian.

Guimaraes’ compatriot has made 26 appearances for Juve this season but is yet to register a goal.

Magpies target receives criticism

Arthur played a full 90 minutes in the recent 3-0 Champions League defeat to Villarreal.

The round of 16 tie was perfectly poised after a 1-1 draw in Spain in the first leg. But Juve collapsed at home, losing 3-0 to Unai Emery’s men.

And Arthur came in for criticism from former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

“I am really disappointed by what Juve showed this evening,” Evra said while appearing on Amazon Prime.

“It feels like Max Allegri is performing miracles with what he’s got, because there is no quality there, especially in midfield.

“In my day, we had Claudio Marchisio, Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo, [but] now there’s Arthur…

“I don’t think he made a single pass that really changed play today. He doesn’t make the difference.”
