An ex-Arsenal attacker who split opinion in the latter stages of his Gunners career is on a shortlist of Newcastle transfer targets, claims a report.
Now the world’s richest football club, all eyes will be on Newcastle United in the January transfer window. A new manager and sporting director will likely be installed before then which will help to develop a clear plan of attack in the market.
Thus far, players far and wide have been tipped to join the revolution.
Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic was the latest to be linked. The Croatian’s contract expires next summer, making that particular deal more viable than most.
But according to Goal (citing Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur), a rather more ambitious swoop is under consideration.
They claim former Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is on the Newcastle transfer shortlist.
Ozil, 33, divided opinion during his stint in north London. Mesmeric displays were often interspersed with a perceived lack of desire for the defensive side of the game.
His latter years at the club saw his role reduced significantly under former boss Unai Emery and later Mikel Arteta despite being the club’s top earner.
That ultimately led to a move to Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce in January where he is the current captain.
Whether a player of Ozil’s age and profile is who Newcastle should be targeting is open to debate. But per the source, he could be joined at St. James’ Park by fellow Fenerbahce teammate Altay Bayındır.
The goalkeeper, 23, earned his first international caps with Turkey in 2021 following stellar form at club level.
His contract expires in 2023, making this winter the ideal opportunity for Fenerbahce to cash in if a suitable offer is lodged.
Barcelona losing faith in positive Newcastle transfer sign?
Meanwhile, Barcelona have begun to lose trust in Newcastle over their attempts to snap up attacker Ousmane Dembele, according to a report.
Magpies chiefs are reportedly willing to offer the Frenchman a contract worth €15million (£12.6million) per season. The fact that his current deal at Barca runs out next summer is playing into the situation.
Indeed, Barcelona are also negotiating to try to tie Dembele down to fresh terms themselves. They have sent an offer to Dembele’s agent, but have yet to hear back.
As such, Mundo Deportivo now claims (via Sport Witness) that Barcelona are beginning to lack trust in Newcastle and Dembele’s agent.
They have become concerned that the representative and the Premier League club are sorting out their own arrangement behind the scenes.
