Future ambition of Newcastle-linked star gives Eddie Howe telling answer on blockbuster transfer chances

James Maddison, Ben Chilwell, England, November 2019

James Maddison could opt against a move to Newcastle United to prioritise a future move in order to play European football, according to one journalist.

Maddison has regularly been the subject to reported interest from biggest Premier League sides. Arsenal and Manchester United have been credited with interest in the past.

However, it is Newcastle that have been the most heavily-linked side of late.

Indeed, the Magpies have made a couple of attempts to sign the Englishman already this season. Newcastle clearly want to elevate themselves to the upper echelons of the Premier League, and Maddison seems a good fit.

However, both of their attempts have been knocked back by Leicester City. They may find themselves unlucky in any future attempts to snare the attacking-midfielder too.

Indeed, Maddison may prioritise a future move to a bigger side, rather than make the switch to Newcastle now, thinks CBS journalist Ben Jacobs.

“Even though Newcastle is a really exciting project and could escalate very quickly, and they’ve made a relatively positive start to the season with a win and a draw, it’s not European football now,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

“I think that Maddison sees himself in the next year or two, playing regular European football.

“That might be Newcastle, so there’s an element of persuasion there of joining the project from the ground up and help us get there.

“But there’s a sort of vague admiration from Spurs. They’ve not done anything with it, but I think it’s that type of club, if they come in for Maddison in a future window that may make him wait.”

Waiting for big move smart of Maddison

It seems a smart decision for Maddison to hold out on a move to a big club. He had his best Premier League season last term, notching 12 goals and providing eight assists.

He was one of the shining lights in a side that had slipped below their usual standards. Indeed, the Foxes finished eighth after back-to-back fifth-placed finishes the two seasons prior.

This season, Maddison has hit form straight away. The midfielder has two goals and one assist in the first three games of the season.

Should he continue in this vein of form, he will be ready for a move to one of the ‘big six’ come the end of the season.
