Newcastle return to January striker target, but will have big hitters to contend with
Newcastle United are reportedly keen on landing Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, but will face competition from some big hitters.
Ekitike was one of a number of stars pursued by the Magpies in January. Eddie Howe’s side spent most of the window linked with a move for the forward.
They even had an agreement in place with Reims to take the star on board. The transfer was reported to have been in the region of £33million.
However, Ekitike himself had reservations about the move. Indeed, the deal was agreed when Newcastle were in the relegation places, and the Frenchman was concerned at the prospect of relegation.
Naturally, he was not too fond of the idea of playing in the second tier. As such, the deal came to a halt, and Ekitike remained in Ligue 1.
However, Newcastle are reported to have reinvigorated their interest, per French outlet But!
Their pursuit may have a greater chance this time, too. Newcastle currently sit 14th in the Premier League – an improvement on their position during the initial stages of their interest, and top-flight survival looks likely.
As such, the striker – who has 10 goals in all competitions this term – may be more keen on a move.
That report states that Reims are looking for around £25million to let Ekitike go. That is less than what Newcastle were reported to have offered previously.
As such, the Magpies will likely not take issue in paying that sum.
Newcastle to contend with big hitters for Ekitike
Other than Newcastle, there have been a few sides linked with a move for Ekitike in recent times. West Ham and French giants Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked.
What’s more, the recent report states that Newcastle will have more big sides to contend with.
In the Premier League, top-four contenders Arsenal and Tottenham have both been linked. A move to either of those clubs could pique Ekitike’s interest.
Interest is also reported from the Bundesliga, in the form of Borussia Dortmund. As such, Newcastle could have a task on their hands to land the 19-year-old.
