Newcastle will need to spend big to land Ibrahim Sangare ahead of rivals as PSV set transfer fee
Newcastle have been told they will have to pay at least £34million if they are to have any chance of signing PSV Eindhoven star Ibrahim Sangare in the summer.
The Magpies have long been linked with a move for Sangare with a new midfielder high on the wanted list. Indeed Newcastle tried to complete a deal in January without much luck. Reports claim that they baulked at the asking price.
PSV Eindhoven will stand firm once again and Newcastle will have to meet the figure or miss out. Reports in Eindhovens Dagblad say the Dutch side want nothing less than £34million.
That figure is the release clause in the player’s contract and they will not settle for anything less. PSV are in a strong position as well as Sangare is under contract until 2025.
There is no pressure to cash in despite interest growing in the player. Aston Villa and Chelsea have also been linked in the past. But Eindhovens Dagblad report that Leicester are the other club along with Newcastle that are really pushing for a deal.
With that in mind PSV are even more confident of getting the full asking price. Such a figure would be a record sale for the club but they are in no rush to do business.
The report claims that there is ‘concrete interest’ from both Newcastle and Leicester. It is well known that Eddie Howe wants a new new midfielder. The same can be said of Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers.
With Youri Tielemans expected to depart Leicester, Sangare is seen as the perfect replacement. The Foxes would expect to get £40million for Tielemans. That would allow them to buy Sangare and have cash left over. Whether they think he is worth it remains to be seen. The same applies to Newcastle.
Newcastle face Sangare dilemma
Newcastle would have no issue raising the funds needed but Howe will be prudent in the summer. He has a budget to work within and a number of positions to strengthen. It would take a large portion of his budget to get the deal done. And the money may be best spent on a goalscorer. Not a defensive midfielder.
Saying that, Sangare has been a revelation for PSV this season. He has made 29 appearances and scored three goals. At 24 he has the potential to go even higher and that is why so many clubs are keen.
The defensive midfielder stands at 6ft 3in and has all the attributes to play in the Premier League. He is also known to be handy for set pieces at either end of the pitch. The powerhouse midfielder is certainly the kind of player to take Newcastle to the next level.
Now the question just remains over whether Newcastle are willing to match PSV’s valuation.
