Newcastle United are exploring deals for Watford winger Ismaila Sarr and a Bundesliga alternative, while reports elsewhere remind of their interest in Yannick Carrasco.
It could be an interesting summer at St James’ Park. With the help of five new signings in January, Newcastle climbed well away from relegation danger and up to mid-table. If they flex their financial muscles again, next season could be even better.
One area they are considering strengthening in the transfer window is out wide. They have been reliant on Allan Saint-Maximin for creativity on the wings in recent seasons. Now, they want more attacking avenues.
According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Newcastle are “looking at” Ismaila Sarr, who has just suffered relegation from the Premier League with Watford.
Sarr stayed with Watford last time they went down, going on to score 13 Championship goals as they earned an instant promotion. However, this time, there will be a battle for his services again.
Liverpool are said to be admirers, but a more realistic move would be to Newcastle, who have also been linked already.
Sheth relays that Watford “will consider sensible offers” for the 24-year-old. He only has two years left on his contract at Vicarage Road.
Simultaneously, Newcastle are keeping an eye on Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby. A number of other Premier League clubs have also been mentioned as potential destinations for the Frenchman.
The 22-year-old is under a slightly longer contract with his Bundesliga employers. His deal will run until 2025, but Newcastle could try to test Leverkusen’s resolve.
Carrasco an alternative to Ismaila Sarr and Moussa Diaby
Yet Newcastle continue to be linked with a plethora of players thanks to their huge financial backing. Another potential target for the flanks, according to Marca, is Yannick Carrasco.
Again, the link is not an entirely new one, but one that seems to be gaining some kind of traction. In fact, Marca remind that Newcastle wanted Carrasco in January, only for him to remain a key player for Atletico Madrid.

His agent is now working on a new contract with Atletico. However, if they do not meet his salary demands, Newcastle could disrupt those negotiations.
Carrasco is holding out for an annual salary of €7m. For Newcastle, that would equate to around £115,000 per week.
The 28-year-old is still tied down to Atletico for another two years. But there could be a chance for Newcastle to swoop in.
Who would be best deal for Newcastle?
All three options are good players who would make Newcastle more exciting in the final third. Perhaps Sarr could be the best value-for-money option, though, given Watford’s relegation.
Even if it seems they have endless funds, it will be important for Newcastle to allocate their transfer budget accordingly across the whole squad.
Therefore, deals for Diaby or Carrasco could get too expensive. Neither player has Premier League experience, either, although both are good enough to make an impact in England.
Sarr already has done, to some extent, and could be the shrewdest signing of the lot. Newcastle may provide him with the platform he needs to take his game to the next level, before it becomes clear if he is capable of reaching the very top.
