Newcastle United form long queue for former Premier League misfit firing in France

Jason Denayer, Belgium, October 2021.

Newcastle United are fixing their gaze on former Premier League defender Jason Denayer, though a number of other sides are also keen, per a report.

The Magpies have clearly identified centre-back as a problem position. They tracked a number of quality central defenders throughout the January window.

Sven Botman was Newcastle’s main target, and they may still attempt to lure him in.

However, they have now set their sights on Denayer, according to Het Nieuwsblad.

The Belgian has previously played in the Premier League, for the Magpies’ rivals Sunderland, no less. He featured in 24 games in the 2016/17 season, when the Black Cats finished rock bottom of the Premier League.

He was sold to Lyon from parent club Manchester City in 2018, and has consistently performed in France.

Furthermore, he has made 33 appearances for Belgium, an impressive feat given the quality the national team possesses. As such, the interest from Newcastle, along with Barcelona, Juventus and Napoli not only make sense, but mean he is spoiled for choice.

Denayer’s contract is up at Lyon this summer, and the report suggests he is keen to move on.

He is reportedly ‘not in a hurry’ to make a decision on a contract offer from the French side. Indeed, it seems he may be stalling for time so he can settle on a destination.

However, the interest from other sides could force the club to make an offer better suited to the Belgian.

Newcastle are also reportedly interested in Moses Simon, also from a Ligue 1 side.

The Magpies are not the only English club interested in the Nigerian, though.

Leeds United have registered an interest of their own in the winger.

The reported £20million fee, though, is likely more suited to Newcastle than in is Leeds.
