Contract dispute gives Newcastle hope of closing snare on familiar Ligue 1 star

Jason Denayer, Moussa Dembele, Lyon, September 2021.

Contract disputes between Jason Denayer and Lyon could give Newcastle United hope of landing the centre-back on a free transfer.

The Magpies established a top-quality centre-back as a need in the January window. However, they failed to land their top target Sven Botman, who now seems to be heading to AC Milan.

Newcastle are still keen on landing a big-name centre-back, and Jason Denayer has caught their eye.

The Belgian has been plying his trade in Ligue 1 with Lyon for the past four seasons. He has established himself as one of the best central defenders in the league.

He may be more familiar to fans of the English game from his time at Man City between 2014-18, though he never made a senior appearance. Denayer was regularly farmed out on loan that included stints with Celtic and Sunderland.

However, the 26-year-old is now a regular for the top-ranked country in the world, Belgium.

As such, he could be a top signing for Newcastle as they look to become a powerhouse in English football. And they might just have a chance of landing him for free, per RMC Sport.

That report states Lyon are failing to come to an agreement with the Belgian over a new deal. Furthermore, Denayer’s deal runs out at the end of the season, so he would walk away for free, should it not be renewed.

It is also believed that Denayer is seeking a new challenge. He was relegated from the Premier League with Sunderland in 2016/17, and a return would give him the chance to prove his worth in England.

Zaidu Sanusi from Porto a target for Newcastle United this summer

Newcastle United are looking at Zaidu Sanusi from Porto this summer

Given the Magpies’ reported interest previously, they are gearing up to swoop for the centre-back.

Denayer would likely be one of a number of signings at St James’ Park in the summer, if he does join.

Denayer and Osimhen big Magpies targets

Victor Osimhen, Napoli, February 2022.

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen is another player Newcastle have targeted. Eddie Howe’s side have learned what they would need to do to land him.

The Nigerian would be available for €100million (£83million), per Italian journalist Paolo Bargiggia.

That fee would be a club record, but not out of the realms of possibility, due to Newcastle’s war-chest.

As such, they may be able to land the prolific forward, who has scored 21 times in 50 games for Napoli.
