‘We’ve mismanaged it’; Pundit urges Newcastle move as Man Utd star’s brother wants handcuffs removed

Tim Sherwood has urged Jesse Lingard to leave Manchester United and sign for Newcastle while the player’s brother feels he has been ‘locked up’.

Lingard’s future has been the subject of many column inches during the January transfer window. Promised increased game time by then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the midfielder has played just 88 minutes of league football this term. The arrival of Ralf Rangnick has done nothing to improve his situation.

An exit seems the best situation for all involved. And the 29-year-old has form. He was loaned to West Ham United 12 months ago and scored nine goals to help the Hammers finish sixth.

A permanent move to the London Stadium failed to materialise and it was hoped his career would blossom back at United.

That has not happened and the Magpies seem keen to take him to Tyneside. United are playing hardball over his exit.

They have demanded a £12million bonus from the Magpies if he helps them survive, per The Mail. Sherwood feels United are trying to save face and believes Lingard would be better served at another club.

“I think it’s Man Utd saying ‘we’ve mismanaged it’. Let’s get to a situation now where (we can) scramble as much money as we possibly can for a really good asset,” he told Sky Sports.

“They don’t want to use him. That’s quite clear. When he went to West Ham was a brilliant signing, it was fantastic for him.

“If I’m Jesse Lingard, or if I’m his representative, I’m telling him to sit where he is. I think Jesse should say ‘yes, okay, I’ll go to Newcastle.’ I would say to Man Utd I want to leave the club.”

Lingard needs releasing

There is no question that Lingard should be playing regular football. The Warrington-born star returned to England colours last year after his West Ham spell.

He now has 36 Three Lions caps and has designs on playing in this year’s World Cup. He will not be selected unless he is playing regular first-team football.

Lingard’s brother, Louie Scott, has taken to social media to get involved in his sibling’s plight. With a reference to rap star Akon’s song ‘Locked up’, he turned the clock back a year to Lingard’s West Ham move.

“A year ago today we was ‘allowed’ out on day release. Now we know how Akon feel,” he posted on Instagram.

Scott used the handcuffs emoji on a picture of his brother celebrating a goal to emphasise his point.
