Newcastle look likely to miss out on Jesse Lingard despite preparing an increased offer, amid claims the player is more tempted by a move to their Premier League rivals.

Lingard, 29, has been afforded a paltry 88 minutes of Premier League action this term. His sparkling loan spell with West Ham last season suggested he might be given a chance back at Old Trafford. However, neither Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Ralf Rangnick have seen fit to up Lingard’s game-time.

And with just six months left on his deal, a parting of ways appears increasingly likely this month.

Rather than a straight sale though, Manchester United are preparing to listen to loan offers for the player. As such, Newcastle on Wednesday launched a £2m bid for his services, as well as covering the entirity of his £75,000 a week salary.

However, talkSPORT reports that opening offer has been rejected by the Red Devils. Indeed, they are reportedly seeking a fee of £3.5m to take the player on loan.

As such, Newcastle are ready to meet United’s demands and pay the full £3.5m asking price.

However, their hopes of signing him appear far from cut and dried. Indeed, multiple reports state that Lingard is instead willing to wait for a return to West Ham, where he impressed on loan last season.

And with the Hammers reportedly readying an approach of their own, it seems Lingard’s return to West Ham looks the likely course of action.

West Ham favourites to sign player

The Hammers saw a big-money offer to sign the player permanently rejected by Manchester United last summer.

But now, knowing they can sign him for just £3.5m on loan – just £500,000 more than they paid last season – ahead of a free transfer, Moyes is finally set to land his man.

West Ham will then likely offer Lingard a permanent two year deal, with the free transfer capture likely to please their supporters.

The Hammers used the cash last summer to instead sign Nikola Vlasic. However, the Croatian has struggled to find top form. Indeed, in 20 appearances for West Ham, he’s managed just one goal and two assists.

Clive Allen can see Jesse Lingard at Tottenham

Clive Allen, meanwhile, would like to see Tottenham sign Lingard, arguing he could help Harry Kane return to his best.

Allen told talkSPORT: “When he came to West Ham he was outstanding, when he spent some time in east London.

“He is a talented player and at the moment Spurs are looking for an injection. One, they need some creativity in that midfield area.

“Harry Kane is looking a little frustrated at the lack of opportunities created for him.

“Someone of Lingard’s quality would be a fabulous addition.”
