Jorge Mendes instrumental with new manager in frame for Newcastle job

Jorge Mendes

Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes is pushing for Newcastle to bring in an Italian coach to replace Steve Bruce, according to a report.

The former defender left St James’ Park by mutual consent on October 20. His departure was a direct result of the club’s huge £305m takeover, which looks set to catapult them up the Premier League table in the future.

Newcastle officials have installed Graeme Jones as interim boss while they search for Bruce’s successor.

Paulo Fonseca is one rumoured target. The 48-year-old has managed Porto, Braga and Roma so far in his career.

He was in line for the Tottenham job before Nuno Espirito Santo’s appointment this summer. Fonseca is reportedly ‘confident’ about getting the Newcastle role thanks to his ambitious January transfer plan.

Another candidate is 63-year-old Lucien Favre. He has been without work since departing Borussia Dortmund in December 2020.

A new name has now appeared as part of the managerial hunt. Goal, citing reports in the Italian press, claim that Mendes has offered Italy legend Gennaro Gattuso to Newcastle.

Newcastle send scouts to watch Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz

Newcastle are stepping up their interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz and have sent scouts to Germany according to reports, with more news on Jesse Lingard and Aaron Ramsey.

The former midfielder is a free agent after leaving Napoli earlier this year. He too was linked with the Spurs vacancy before chairman Daniel Levy vetoed a deal.

Gattuso is now under consideration on Tyneside, although it’s unclear whether a move could take place. Questions remain over the 43-year-old’s fiery nature and whether he would be able to take Newcastle to the next level.

The report states that Newcastle’s new boss will be announced in the next few weeks. They could be revealed during November’s international break.

Everyone involved with Newcastle will undoubtedly be excited about what the future holds. The Magpies could follow in Man City’s footsteps by breaking into England’s elite.

Interim boss sends Newcastle January warning

Meanwhile, caretaker manager Jones has urged his bosses not to make ‘wholesale changes’ in January.

At Friday’s press conference he said: “I think we’ve got a good core here. For different reasons we started poorly, that’s the truth. There’s nobody more important than the core group of players at this football club.

“I can assure you they care about this club. A lot of lads have been here a long time.

“I see January as an opportunity to help the group that is here. You can’t make wholesale changes. The most important thing is to get the best out of the core players here now and then January will be a bonus.”
