Newcastle learn £61m price tag for Chelsea linked Bundesliga star; scouts have been ‘in attendance’

Dominik Szoboszlai Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku of RB Leipzig

Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for RB Leipzig attacker Dominik Szoboszlai. Now, they have reportedly learned his hefty price tag.

The 22-year-old has been in excellent form in the Bundesliga this term and is tipped to get even better in the future. Therefore, he could prove to be an excellent long-term addition for the Magpies.

Eddie Howe has made no secret that he wants to bring in some ‘elite’ players this summer, so it will be interesting to see if Newcastle make a concrete offer for Szoboszlai.

Newcastle have enjoyed a tremendous season. They currently sit in third place in the Premier League table and look set to qualify for the Champions League.

As a result, the Tynesiders will no doubt make several signings this summer. For instance, they have been linked with big money moves for the likes of James Maddison and Christian Pulisic recently.

Indeed, if Howe wants his team to compete among Europe’s elite, he could certainly do with some more quality additions. Although, it’s fair to say Newcastle have proven they are already an excellent team.

Newcastle must pay £61m for Szoboszlai

Now, according to a report from Sky Germany, Newcastle scouts were ‘in attendance’ to see Szoboszlai score the winner in Leipzig’s 2-1 win on Sunday.

The Hungary international has made 43 appearances across all competitions this season. In the process, he has scored eight goals and made 13 assists. This gives him an impressive average of 0.49 goal contributions per game.

Sky Germany adds that Szoboszlai is one of Newcastle’s top targets. But, Chelsea are also believed to hold an interest in him.

However, Leipzig will only sell the Hungarian if his release clause ‘is paid in full.’ That means he will cost Newcastle £61m if they decide to make a move.

This would make Szoboszlai the Magpies’ second-most expensive signing, closely following Alexander Isak, who cost them £63m last summer.

A versatile player, Szoboszlai can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger on either flank. So, he could provide cover in several positions for Howe next season.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle match Leipzig’s hefty price tag. Indeed, if the presence of Newcastle’s scouts is anything to go by, a summer bid is looking increasingly likely.
