Ten Hag decision damaging as Newcastle eye move for Man Utd star frustrated by squad competition

Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay

Erik ten Hag could be to blame as Newcastle want to sign Luke Shaw from Manchester United in a future transfer window, according to a report.

Shaw joined Manchester United from Southampton in July 2014. According to BBC Sport, the left-back cost Manchester United £27million and was one of the world’s most expensive teenagers at the time.

Shaw has gone on to play 218 times for Manchester United, registering three goals and 22 assists. He has helped the Red Devils to win the Europa League, Carabao Cup and Community Shield.

Shaw has largely been Man Utd’s first-choice left-back in the past four years. Last season his place in the side came under threat from Alex Telles as Ralf Rangnick liked the Brazilian. Shaw did still make 27 appearances in all competitions, however.

Shaw, 27, is now having to compete with Tyrell Malacia for a starting spot under Ten Hag. Man Utd spent £14.7m to sign Malacia from Feyenoord in the summer, with the left-back penning a four-year contract at Old Trafford.

Malacia impressed Ten Hag at the start of the season and due to this he’s started Man Utd’s last eight matches. Admittedly, Malacia has struggled recently and was taken off at half time during the recent 3-2 Europa League win over Omonia FC.

Nevertheless, Malacia’s starts will be irritating Shaw, who sees himself as a Man Utd regular. The former Southampton man will also be worried about losing his England spot if he cannot get into the Man Utd team.

Ten Hag’s decision to begin with Shaw on the bench in most games could prove costly as the player is now picking up interest from Premier League rivals.

Newcastle tipped to make exciting move

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are ‘keeping tabs’ on Shaw’s situation and could make a move for him if he becomes available next year.

Shaw’s Man Utd contract expires at the end of the season. The Red Devils do have the option to extend it by 12 months. Having said that, they are certainly in a precarious situation.

If Newcastle contact Shaw’s representatives and let their interest be known, then the defender could run down his Man Utd contract and leave them as a free agent next summer.

This would allow Newcastle to complete a transfer coup and pick up an England international without paying a transfer fee.

Newcastle will monitor Shaw’s situation during the January transfer window. And they will submit a bid if they find out Man Utd are willing to sell for a cut-price fee.

Eddie Howe can currently rely on Matt Targett and Dan Burn on the left side of defence. But Newcastle chiefs reportedly view Shaw as being an upgrade on this duo, setting up a potential raid for him.

It will be intriguing to see how this one plays out. Shaw will not want to spend his prime years on the bench. This may see him hand in a transfer request at Man Utd.

On the flip side, Shaw will also believe in his own ability. He will think his experience should see him get back into the Man Utd starting lineup ahead of Malacia.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan are working hard to organise a contract renewal for a star who is on Newcastle’s recruitment list.
