Newcastle ‘lurking’ for ‘complete midfielder’ Ancelotti loves as Howe plots summer squad overhaul

Newcastle United have ramped up their interest in highly rated Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski, according to reports.
The 28-year-old has been a key player in the Italian’s sides title push this season. As a result, it’s no surprise to see the Magpies vying for his signature.
Indeed, Eddie Howe is looking to bring in some ‘elite’ players in the upcoming window and Zielinski certainly fits that criteria.
According to reports coming out of Italy, Newcastle are ‘lurking’ in the shadows as they plot to sign the Poland international.
Zielinski’s current deal at Napoli will expire in June 2024. As a result, the Serie A league leaders could be forced to sell him for a cut-price fee this summer.
Liverpool have also had the midfielder on their radar in the past, so Newcastle could potentially face competition for him.
As noted by Football Italia, ex-Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti hailed Zielinski as a ‘complete midfielder’ who can ‘play everywhere’ in January 2021.
Indeed, Zielinski could potentially play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder under Howe next term, so it will be interesting to see if the Tynesiders can get a deal over the line.
Howe is planning ahead for the Champions League
Newcastle have enjoyed a fantastic season and currently sit in third place in the Premier League table.
Now, Howe is planning ahead for Champions League football next season and reportedly wants to make some big signings.
Midfield is be one of the key areas the manager wants to improve. Recently, the Magpies have been linked with a move for Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, for instance.
However, Zielinski would definitely be a step up from McTominay, after a top season with Napoli.
In 30 league appearances this term, the Pole has made eight assists and scored three goals overall.
As mentioned, Zielinski is versatile and can play in any midfield position. His best attribute is undoubtedly his passing, though, making an average of two key passes per game, with a pass success rate of 86%.
Indeed, with Napoli currently 17 points clear at the top of Serie A, they definitely have Zielinski to thank for their success.
Trophies are, after all, will be what Howe is looking for at Newcastle next season.
The manager has already achieved a lot in a short space of time. But, with the North East club failing to lift a major trophy since 1955 – the fans are hungry for success.
With that in mind, Zielinski could be exactly the kind of player Newcastle need. However, with a valuation of £40m, the Magpies will have to put their money where their mouth is.
