Newcastle last-minute ‘call’ to Man Utd target revealed as Howe tries to poach Ten Hag favourite

Newcastle reportedly made a bold last-minute attempt to sign Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae, who looks set to join Bayern Munich.

Eddie Howe has a number of high-profile targets on his transfer shortlist and he would have frustrated Manchester United if he had signed the South Korea international.

The Red Devils were previously ‘close’ to signing Min-jae. However, Erik ten Hag has since switched his attention to alternative targets.

Indeed, Man Utd are now leading the race for Axel Disasi instead. As a result, everything points towards Min-jae joining Bayern Munich this summer.

The 26-year-old played a key role as Napoli lifted their first Serie A title since 1990. He made 35 Serie A appearances last season.

In the process, he helped his team to 16 clean sheets, as well as scoring two goals.

So, it’s no surprise to see some of Europe’s biggest clubs chasing him.

Also, Min-jae is available for a ridiculously cheap fee this summer. Indeed, his Napoli contract includes a €50m (approx. £43m) release clause that can be triggered before July 1.

Newcastle make cheeky ‘call’ to Min-jae

According to Italian journalist Ciro Venerato (cited by Calcio Napoli 24), Newcastle made a last-minute attempt to sign Min-jae.

Venerato said: “We reconfirm what was said: Kim chose Bayern, but there has been a call from Newcastle in the last few hours to Naples.

“However, the club then learned from the player’s agents that he has now chosen Bayern.”

Therefore, Newcastle must have been willing to pay Min-jae’s £43m release clause. So, it’s clear that Howe is keen to bring in a centre-back this summer.

The manager’s current first choice pairing of Fabian Schar and Sven Botman were key to the Magpies success last term.

In fact, they conceded just 33 goals – the joint-best record in the Premier League, along with Manchester City.

Nevertheless, Howe wants to bring in some quality support for Schar and Botman, especially with Lascelles expected to leave St James’ Park this summer.

But, it seems he will have to look for alternatives to Min-jae as he still looks set to join Bayern, despite Newcastle’s cheeky call.
