Newcastle told to act fast to beat Tottenham to mesmerising Prem star, making big statement

Transfer insider Dean Jones has told Newcastle United they can make a big statement if they act fast and beat Tottenham to James Maddison.
Maddison could have made a move to Newcastle in the summer. Indeed, the Magpies sent two bids to Leicester City, attempting to secure the services of the attacking-midfielder.
That was after he had a fantastic season with the Foxes. Maddison scored 12 goals and registered eight assists in the Premier League, as Leicester finished eighth, three places above Newcastle.
The Englishman signed the season off with four goals and three assists in the last four games of the season. It is little wonder Newcastle went after him.
Their first bid was of £40million, and the second totalled around £50million. However, those were both below Leicester’s ideal valuation of Maddison – £60million.
As such, after two attempts, Newcastle decided to end their pursuit.
However, links have remained throughout this season. Reports have suggested both Newcastle and Tottenham are ready to approach Leicester for him next summer.
His mesmeric form this season has likely helped with each side’s decision. Indeed, 10 goal contributions in 12 games in a team that was struggling at the start of the season shows how much of a talent Maddison is.
Newcastle could make big statement with Maddison
While it could be that approaches are coming next summer, Newcastle have been told by insider Jones that they should act fast for a couple of reasons.
“I think they should probably put in another offer in January just to see whether they can do this, especially if they know there are other clubs like Tottenham watching this situation,” he told GIVEMESPORT.
Indeed, snaring Maddison ahead of Tottenham would show Newcastle the power they have. There is also, of course, the issue that they could lose out to Tottenham if they do not make the first move.
Of course, Newcastle can now contend with anyone from a financial standpoint. However, that does not mean that quality players will all want to come.
The potential signing of Maddison could show them that their football is bringing stars to the club. The fact they are third in the league at present will not hurt matters at all.
However, Tottenham have been top-four contenders most seasons for a long time. As such, it would be interesting to see, if both clubs went after Maddison, who he would pick.
Maddison sent test
It would also be an interesting decision for Maddison for another reason. Jones feels another approach will show if he is still has an allegiance to Leicester.
“It’ll be a really interesting one for him to think about and it will test his loyalty to Brendan Rodgers,” Jones added.
Indeed, Maddison has played for the King Power outfit for coming up to five years. However, there is a time in every footballer’s career when they need to move on to bigger and better things.
Maddison has the talent to become one of the Premier League’s very best players.
Achieving that feat seems a lot more likely at Newcastle or Tottenham than it does at Leicester. It would be no surprise if he chose to leave the Foxes, should either of those sides offer.
