Marco Asensio has parted company with his agent amid links with Newcastle United and Arsenal, reports have revealed – but a new representative could push him elsewhere.
Asensio is into the final year of his contract with Real Madrid. There has been a bit of confusion over what his plans are next. Some sources have indicated he would be willing to see out his deal in the Spanish capital.
Alternatively, he could sign a contract extension with them, but only for a wage rise that has so far not been on offer. Indeed, Madrid could prefer to sell him this summer to avoid any risk of losing him for nothing.
Amid his intriguing situation, Asensio has been linked with a few Premier League clubs. For example, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle have all been tipped to make moves. Interest from Liverpool has been discarded, though.
Indeed, links with Newcastle seem to have been the ones gathering most momentum recently. There have even been rumours of them making a bid.
Recently, AS‘ Alfredo Relano, speaking via El Larguero, revealed that Asensio has ended his association with agent Horacio Gaggioli. His motive is to use someone else to find a new club after all, despite the most recent indications before that being that he would stay with Real Madrid.
Newcastle could be on alert, then, for the chances of Asensio changing clubs. However, Relano also claimed the winger is entrusting another agent with an alternative plan.
Supposedly, he wants Jorge Mendes to orchestrate a move to Serie A champions AC Milan. There has been contact between the Italian side – who want to add an attacking midfielder to their title-winning squad – and the super-agent.
Whether a move can materialise, only time will tell. But joining Milan – with Champions League football on offer – would be preferable to someone like Newcastle, who are a good few years away from such targets for the time being.
AC Milan seem to be in pole position for Asensio
This is not the first time a report has indicated Milan may have the better chance of landing Asensio.
Arsenal and Liverpool linked to £34m Marco Asensio move
Arsenal and Liverpool are being linked to Marco Asensio as the Real Madrid winger only has one year left on his current deal.
At 26 years of age, he wants to find a club where he can be a regular starter. Milan would be able to give him more guarantees than Madrid, despite his 42 appearances and 12 goals last season for the Spaniards.
Asensio would be a regular for Newcastle too. But the fact of the matter is that, while able to pick up some high-profile targets already (having beaten Milan to Sven Botman, for example), they won’t be able to convince every one to join them yet.
There could be some other options on the market, though. So perhaps they should be – or already could be – expanding their shortlist.
