Newcastle submit £25m bid for French forward only outscored by Mbappe and one other in Ligue 1 last season

Newcastle United have entered the race for in-demand Rennes forward Martin Terrier with a £25million bid, according to a report.

Terrier was one of the standout players in Ligue 1 last season. Only PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Monaco’s Wissam Ben-Yedder scored more than his 21 league goals. There were also seven assists among his 45 appearances in all competitions.

By far, it was the best season of the 25-year-old’s career. Never before had he hit double figures of goals in a single Ligue 1 season.

As a result of his improving form, Terrier has been linked with a transfer away from Rennes. Although they have Europa League football on offer after coming fourth in Ligue 1 last season, he could still have some options to consider.

Tottenham, Liverpool, Leeds and Everton are among the clubs to have been mentioned as potential contenders for Terrier’s signature. But according to Football Insider, fellow Premier League side Newcastle have now made their move.

The online outlet claims Terrier is the latest attacking player whom Newcastle have bid for. Their proposal to Rennes is worth a figure in the region of £25million. Although times are changing on Tyneside, Newcastle have still only ever spent bigger on five players.

This summer, they are yet to add an attacking player despite looking at various options. Their only new arrivals have been goalkeeper Nick Pope and defender Sven Botman.

It is still on their agenda to add further competition in the attacking areas. Now, they are trying their luck with Terrier.

However, a problem is that the former Lille product is publicly open to staying at Rennes. As noted in the report, his current employers are currently working to extend his contract, which is due to expire in 2025.

That said, Newcastle are hoping to give him something else to think about with their own offer. They would be able to take him outside the French football system for the first time in his career.

Martin Terrier would be useful in multiple ways for Newcastle

Able to play as a left winger or centre-forward, Terrier would be a useful option for Newcastle to have – especially if he can keep up his goalscoring rate. Indeed, he has already got one goal to his name from three appearances this season.

How many more he makes for Rennes remains to be seen. His overall record for them since joining from Lyon in 2020 is 86 games, 31 goals and 15 assists.

Newcastle need more goalscorers if they are to strive higher up the table. Their progress since Eddie Howe took charge – and since their Saudi-backed takeover in general – has been positive. But they are not yet of the same level as the clubs competing for Europe, like Rennes are in France.

Still, they are becoming an attractive destination for many players, so Terrier would have to consider them if he does decide for a new challenge. And his qualities in a couple of roles could be exactly what Newcastle need.
