Matt Targett explains ‘easy decision’ to confirm Newcastle stay as Eddie Howe emphasises contribution

Matt Targett has spoken of his delight at becoming a permanent Newcastle United player after agreeing to a four-year contract with the club.
After spending the second half of last season on loan at Newcastle from Aston Villa, there was plenty of anticipation for what Targett’s future would hold. He made a positive impression at St James’ Park and impressed manager Eddie Howe.
As such, after he completed a medical on Wednesday, Newcastle have triggered their option to buy Targett from their fellow Premier League rivals. Villa have confirmed that the cost of the transfer is £15m.
Consequently, Targett is the first signing of what could be an interesting summer transfer window at St James’ Park.
Newcastle have tied him down to a four-year contract, which will last until 2026. For Targett, not much thought had to go into agreeing.
He told their club website: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign a four-year contract with this club.
“For me, it was an easy decision to make the loan permanent after the welcome I had from my fellow players, the staff, the supporters and the owners so I’m really happy to be here.”
The 26-year-old will therefore spend his prime years as a Newcastle player, should all go to plan.
Here to stay! ✍️

Targett was one of five signings Newcastle made in the January transfer window. Thanks to the combined efforts of the new-look squad, the Magpies eventually finished 11th, despite being in relegation danger earlier in the season.
Now, they can build for a bigger future, which Targett will be a part of.
Howe equally delighted over Targett stay
His head coach was in no doubt about the benefits a permanent deal for the left-back would bring.
Howe added: “Matt had a fantastic impact after joining on loan in January and made a big contribution to some excellent team performances.
“He is a great lad and a top professional who undoubtedly makes us stronger so I’m delighted he sees his future here.”
To date, Targett has made 16 appearances for Newcastle. Now, there will be many more to come over the course of the next few seasons.
