Newcastle told of three January signings they need – with Man Utd outcast up first

Newcastle have been told to prioritise the Jesse Lingard transfer in the January window, as well as two other deals, if they want to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Magpies are up and running under Eddie Howe after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Burnley at the weekend. The three points was enough to lift them off the bottom and to within three points of safety. And with the January window now just weeks away, hopes are growing that the great escape in on.

Indeed, with a new-found wealth at their disposal thanks to their stupidly-rich Saudi backers, Newcastle are likely to be big players in January.

Speculation has risen, as a result, about which players they could target. To that end, an exciting report on Monday detailed the enormous package they had offered to Lingard.

Now former Toon favourite Rob Lee has given the signing of Lingard his blessing. He’s also named two other solid signings they should look to seal if they want to avoid the drop.

Lee told Coffee Friend: “I would say Kieran Trippier, James Tarkowski and Jesse Lingard.

“Lingard would score goals, it’s what Newcastle need. West Ham are probably desperate to get him back, he was unbelievable for them. He’s got energy, he gets around the pitch and he’ll get on the end of things and score goals.

“Tarkowski, he’s been in England squads, he’s a good defensive player, strong, quick and a bit of a leader.

Newcastle ahead of West Ham, Everton in pursuit of Jesse Lingard

Newcastle are reportedly leading the race to sign Jesse Lingard in January, after details emerged over the enormous offer they have put on the table to Manchester United.

“I’ve always liked Trippier, they’re the players you could get and they’d want to come to Newcastle. That’s important.

“We don’t want players coming to Newcastle just for the money, but players who want to play for this club and play for these fans. If we get those types of players in, we’ll be okay.”

Lingard transfer needed for Newcastle to avoid drop

Lee made 381 appearances for Newcastle during a 10-year spell on Tyneside. And he knows more than most what is needed to play for the club.

However, he fears that should they make some telling signings in January, then relegation may well be on the cards.

“If Newcastle don’t bring in any reinforcements, we’ll go down,” Lee added.

“The players have improved since Eddie Howe has come in, but still, if Newcastle don’t get players in, it’s wise enough to know they aren’t good enough [to keep the club up].

“There’s a reason why Newcastle are where they are. I was at the game on Saturday [against Burnley], Callum Wilson scored the goal, but did we look like scoring any more?

“We had a couple of chances, but Callum Wilson seems to be the only person scoring. If he gets injured, we’re in serious trouble because no one else is scoring goals.”
