Pundit sets big target for Newcastle but wants four more like Bruno Guimaraes

Jamie Carragher says Newcastle are safe from relegation following the win over Wolves and believes a top-10 finish could even be possible.

Newcastle picked up a crucial three points as a Chris Wood strike earned them a 1-0 win. The victory at St James’ Park moved them up to 14th, 10 points clear of the drop zone. Burnley and Everton both have two games in hand but Carragher says it does not matter.

Speaking on Sky Sports Carragher questioned whether either the Clarets or Toffees could reach 34 points. There are still seven games left for Newcastle and Carragher is looking higher.

Newcastle looking up

Newcastle had lost three games on the spin going in to the Wolves games. But it is amazing what three points can do.

Carragher was impressed with the way Newcastle played and says they should not be looking over their shoulder. Indeed he thinks they should be looking up at the top half.

Only three points separate them from Leicester City in 10th spot. Again Newcastle have played more games than the teams above them. Even so Carragher believes that the top 10 is achievable.

Newcastle want Paulo Dybala

Newcastle want Paulo Dybala

Newcastle and Arsenal are both in for Juventus star Paulo Dybala.

“Imagine getting to 10th, it might be too much to ask but the way they’re playing, certainly at home, they look like a mid-table Premier League club,” he said. “In these last six or seven weeks they don’t look like a team that’s fighting relegation.

“They are a dangerous team, got certain players, Saint-Maximin, Bruno Guimaraes, they’ve got quality, no doubt.”

Carragher said Guimaraes was “the best player by a mile” against Wolves. Describing the Brazilian as a “class act”. And looking to the future he says Newcastle need to sign more players like him.

Boss Eddie Howe will be embarking on a spending spree in the summer. Money should be no real object and Carragher knows what the Magpies need more of.

Big summer needed

“The players that Newcastle bought in January, a lot of them were good, solid Premier League players who are here to keep Newcastle in the Premier League,” Carragher added.

“He wasn’t signed for that. He was signed for the future. The reaction of the crowd in the stadium, that’s the calibre of signing you want. Maybe another three or four like that in the summer to really push Newcastle forward.”

Howe’s men now have back-to-back home games against Leicester and Crystal Palace. Two more wins in the bag and the top 10 will be looking possible.
