Pundit reveals why landing James Maddison would be ‘one of the big signings of this new Newcastle era’

Newcastle United have been told that they should meet Leicester City’s valuation in their bid to beat the likes of Tottenham to the signing of James Maddison.

Eddie Howe’s men have so far seen bids of £40million and £50m rejected for the England playmaker, with the Foxes valuing one of their top stars at nearer to £60m.

Maddison, who is also a target for Tottenham and potentially Arsenal, has two years remaining on his existing contract. That scenario leaves this summer as Leicester’s only realistic opportunity to demand a fee that high for the player.

And former Scotland boss Alex McLeish believes Maddison is worth every penny. He also thinks Newcastle should take the plunge and snap up the attacking midfielder.

“My reaction to that is, now we’re talking, Newcastle,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“Now you are talking, he is a superb player. I remember watching videos of him as a kid, him practising with his Dad in the garden.

“He’s a two-footed player and he has tremendous ability. For me, he is a well-rounded player and well worth the money Newcastle will have to pay for him.

“He would be one of the big signings of this new Newcastle era. I am gobsmacked by the prices you see for players these days.

“But James Maddison is up there with all of the best box-to-box midfielders you see in the game all over the world.

“I rate him very highly.”

Maddison brings goals and assists

Maddison scored 12 Premier League goals during last season. That figure is more than any one single Newcastle player, while he also had eight assists to his name.

But despite Newcastle’s firm interest, they need to be wary of a rival offer from Premier League rivals Tottenham.

Antonio Conte wants a playmaker added to his squad this summer and is trying to offload record signing Tanguy Ndombele to create room in his squad.

To that end, Newcastle need to act quickly to try get a deal over the line, otherwise Spurs may pip them to the post.

The Magpies start their 2022/23 campaign against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
