Pundit stunned by Newcastle links to Benfica star Goncalo Ramos as £100m exit clause emerges

Former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has been left blown away by the reported release clause in Newcastle target Goncalo Ramos’ contract.

Reports recently emerged of Eddie Howe’s interest in the Benfica hotshot, with the Portuguese giants said to be ready to do business at a figure above £25.4million.

Indeed, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano claimed that Ramos is now PIF’s top transfer target.

However, there are now reports that Benfica included a whopping £100m exit clause if the player’s contract after he signed a new deal with them.

And that has led to Kenny revealing his shock at the calibre of player that Newcastle are now chasing.

He told Football Insider, when learning of the figure involved: “£100million, wow. It’s all about potential with Newcastle.

“They had a great start and we know they are gradually going to improve this squad over the next couple of windows.

“Yet again, it’s someone with potential. Until you stick him in the Premier League we don’t know, do we?

“It’s that guessing game. If he can come in and learn from Callum Wilson, that is a good thing. I like the way Newcastle are going.

“I’m excited to see how they do this season and who else comes in.”

Ramos a striker bang in form

Ramos managed eight goals and four assists in his breakthrough season with Benfica last term.

However, he’s started this campaign in stunning fashion after scoring a hat-trick in Benfica’s 4-1 home win against FC Midtjylland in their UEFA Champions League qualifier. He also already has three assists to his name.

If Ramos does arrive on Tyneside that it might prove to be the end of Chris Wood’s short stay at the club.
