Reims reveal ‘very concrete’ bid received for Hugo Ekitike with nod towards Newcastle United

Hugo Ekitike after being sent off for Reims

The president of Reims has confirmed an offer has arrived on the Ligue 1 club’s desk for Hugo Ekitike, hinting it is from Newcastle United.

Newcastle wanted to sign Ekitike during the January transfer window. However, the timing wasn’t right for the young striker. Nevertheless, Newcastle have not lost sight of their target ahead of the summer.

Chris Wood reinforced their attacking ranks in the winter. The plan is still to pair him with a younger forward like Ekitike.

And there has been progress on that front. Indeed, reports this week claimed there was an agreement in place for a five-year contract. In turn, it is up to the clubs to negotiate.

Newcastle could have stepped up their efforts in that regard. Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot claims to be dealing with a bid for Ekitike at present, even if he has not namechecked Newcastle immediately.

He told France Bleu, when asked if he has any concrete offers for Ekitike: “Yes. Today is very concrete.

“And on the table, there is one that suits us very well. An offer which, in my view, is sportingly interesting for the player and it is now up to him to make his choice, it is not for me to do so.

“From now on, it is his advisers who must move forward on this file. And if at the time of speaking this is not done, it is because his advisers have not yet wished to move forward with this club.”

Asked for the identity of the club, he replied with a smile: “We remain discreet but hey… it’s an English club so we [you] understand which club we’re talking about…”

Perhaps the pieces are falling into place for Newcastle.

Hugo Ekitike asking price clarified

However, they will have to make a significant investment to get their man. Caillot has clarified his recent claims about Ekitike’s price tag.

He explained: “So, you have to be very careful what you say because in other interviews I said it was between €20m and €40m and it was said that the real price that I had announced, it was €20m.

“Let things be clear: at €20m, Hugo Ekitike will not leave. Today, the value of the player with all that we can detect in his potential, we must be between €30m and €40m according to the different montages.”

In English currency, that means Ekitike could cost between £25.7m and £34.3m at present exchange rates.

It could be a worthwhile investment for Newcastle as they build for the future. Ekitike scored 11 goals in 26 appearances for Reims’ first team this season.
