Newcastle United follow familiar strategy in Atletico Madrid double raid for Renan Lodi, Yannick Carrasco

Newcastle United are lining up a double raid of Atletico Madrid, as they are eyeing both Renan Lodi and Yannick Carrasco this summer.

Newcastle have recruited well since their takeover last year. The £90million they spent in January was put to good use, as they climbed easily to safety, finishing 11th in the league.

Indeed, the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood all helped them to climb the table. The Magpies will want to build on their 11th-placed finish this season.

Adding more quality to the side should help them to do that. Newcastle have already been linked with some big names for the summer window.

It seems they will follow a familiar strategy with a couple of their potential signings. Marca reports that the Magpies are interested in a double raid of Atletico, for Lodi and Carrasco.

Of course, they signed Trippier from the same side in January, and could follow suit with two more signings.

Newcastle have been linked with both Lodi and Carrasco at different times. The Lodi links began recently, and whispers of a move for Carrasco stemmed from the January window.

The report explains how Newcastle want to settle in ‘the aristocracy’ of the Premier League. With their desires to climb the table and once again be a big top-flight side, the pursuit of the two stars makes sense.

Newcastle would likely have no problems with financing the transfer fee of either star.

The report claims that Lodi would cost in the region of £40million. Carrasco has a release clause of £60million, so the round figure of £100million should be enough to snare both players.

Lodi and Carrasco would up Magpies quality

Should Newcastle sign both players, they would naturally add to the quality in the squad. Both men played a role in Atletico’s title-winning La Liga campaign last season.

Lodi played 23 games, scoring one goal and assisting two. Carrasco – upon rejoining the club – made 30 appearances, and contributed to 16 goals.

Both stars have continued in that vein, and have totalled more games this season. As such, Newcastle would be getting a pair of competent players, who would surely help them to climb the table further.

Both men would no doubt be afforded a starring role in the side, too. Should Newcastle able to land both, they would be very good additions to the side.
