Newcastle United have tabled a bid to sign experienced defender Kieran Trippier and Atletico Madrid are prepared to let him leave.

The Magpies are now able to add to their squad as the transfer window opened on January 1. There is much intrigue surrounding who the north-east outfit might sign over the next few weeks. The Saudi-backed takeover means manager Eddie Howe has funds at his disposal and he needs to make use of them.

Newcastle sit 19th in the top-flight standings and are embroiled in a relegation fight. They have 19 games to save their season and avoid the embarrassment of relegation following the high-profile buyout.

Trippier has long been linked with a winter switch to St James’ Park. And Los Colchoneros manager Diego Simeone has made it clear the ball is now firmly in the player’s court.

“Tripper now has to decide if he wants to leave or not,” he said. “We will move on his decision.”

The England right-back left Tottenham to move to Madrid in the summer of 2019. He has made 67 LaLiga appearances for Atletico but his days at the club may be numbered.

Howe worked with the 31-year-old while in charge of Burnley. The ex-Bournemouth boss is a big fan of the man with 35 England caps.

And he is pushing hard to lure him back to the Premier League. However, Newcastle are not the only club interested in the full-back.

Trippier in demand for January move

There is no question that Newcastle have the money to target top-class players. The days of austerity under Mike Ashley are now in the past.

And it was reported earlier this week that Trippier would become the club’s highest-paid player if he signs up. But Newcastle are among nine clubs who hold and interest in the Bury-born ace.

Manchester United are known to be keen and have been linked once again. Tottenham have also been mentioned in connection with their former player.

Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Everton and Wolves were also listed in a report by 90min. But it is the link to Newcastle that appears the strongest.

Despite being the wrong side of 30, Trippier is still a top-class player. He started for England in the final of Euro 2020 last summer and has enjoyed 14 league outings for Atletico this term.

Howe needs to shore up his defence as the men in black and white have already shipped 42 league goals in 2021-2022. But Trippier also provides ammunition going forward, with superb crosses from the right.

His experience will be key as the manager tries to plot a route away from the bottom three. There will be further additions before the end of the month.

And it seems as though Howe is keen to get his business done as soon as possible to start the rebuilding process. It has also been stated that Trippier will have a relegation clause in his contract.

He has ambitions to feature at the World Cup and wants to avoid playing in the Championship if Newcastle go down.
