Newcastle gaze unwavering, as £20m Prem deal takes shape after Arsenal transfer setback

Robert Sanchez playing for Brighton

Newcastle United have made Robert Sanchez their new top goalkeeper target after seemingly being forced to move on from Bernd Leno, according to reports.

Although Newcastle are trying to curb expectations for their first summer transfer window since their Saudi-backed takeover, they are expected to make some signings. One area on their agenda to strengthen is the starting goalkeeper berth.

That is currently occupied by Martin Dubravka, who has been fairly reliable for them. But the 33-year-old could be phased out for a new number one next season.

There are several targets who could fill the role. According to The Sun, one of the latest options they are considering is Brighton shot-stopper Robert Sanchez.

The 24-year-old has become a full Spain international thanks to his development with Brighton. Now, Newcastle could try to capitalise by making an offer for his services.

They have already poached defender Dan Burn from Brighton and technical director Dan Ashworth will follow. If Eddie Howe gets his way, Robert Sanchez would also swap the Amex Stadium for St James’ Park.

To test their luck, Newcastle United are ready to make an opening offer in the region of £20m for Sanchez. Given he came through Brighton’s academy ranks, it could be decent business for both clubs.

Sanchez is currently under contract with the Seagulls until the summer of 2025. He has kept eight clean sheets from 29 Premier League appearances so far this season.

In comparison, Dubravka has recorded four shut-outs from 17 Premier League appearances this term for Newcastle.

Robert Sanchez represents Bernd Leno alternative

Bernd Leno, Aaron Ramsdale, Arsenal, March 2022.

Their interest in Sanchez may come as a result of news that they are likely to miss out on Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.

After losing his place as Arsenal’s first-choice to Aaron Ramsdale, Leno is likely to be on the move this summer. Newcastle had been hopeful that they may be able to take advantage by prising him away.

But the Daily Star reported – shortly before The Sun‘s update on Sanchez – that Leno is unlikely to accept Newcastle as his next destination, despite Arsenal making him available for between £5m and £10m.

Instead, the Germany international could return to the Bundesliga with his former club Bayer Leverkusen.

In turn, Newcastle must weigh up alternatives. The Star suggested Kepa Arrizabalaga of Chelsea, but what has emerged from The Sun since indicates Robert Sanchez may be a more likely option.
