Sevilla now lag behind in January winger race as report highlights two key reasons why Newcastle have edge for Barca star

Memphis Depay Barcelona 2022 TEAMtalk1

Newcastle United reportedly have two key advantages over Sevilla in the race to sign Barcelona star Memphis Depay, but one snag remains.

The 28-year-old is now in the final season of a two-year deal he inked in June 2021. And rumours persist that the Netherlands international will be on his way in January. He can leave for free next summer and the Nou Camp giants are keen to receive a fee for the winger.

Barca have been tipped to strengthen in the new year and any income to offset their outlay will be gratefully received.

Depay is unlikely to be handed new terms with the Catalans. Having joined on a free transfer from Lyon, the Dutchman made 20 starts among 28 LaLiga appearances last season.

However, the arrival of Robert Lewandowski has seen his game time diminish in 2022-2023.

A hamstring injury picked up in late September has not helped matters. And it could be that the former Manchester United forward has kicked his last ball for the club.

He is in the Netherlands squad for the Word Cup. And, with plenty of eyes on the man with 42 Oranje goals, it is the perfect stage to prove to suitors that he is worth an investment.

Sevilla and the Magpies have both been heavily linked.

Eddie Howe has guided the Tynesiders to third in the Premier League standings. And it seems as though he will be backed by the owners to further improve his squad in January.

And it is Newcastle’s financial strength that puts them way ahead of Los Rojiblancos in the battle for Depay’s signature, per Mundo Deportivo.

Depay could be attracted to Newcastle project

Howe has dragged Newcastle from the depths of despair to a side battling for a Champions League spot.

The ex-Bournemouth chief  has done it in little more than a year and with a number of prudent acquisitions. He has had money to spend and, with the sky seemingly the limit, they are now an attractive proposition.

That is another key aspect of the race for Depay, with Sevilla currently languishing in the LaLiga relegation zone.

He is keen to play in the Champions League and has far more chance of doing that at St James’ Park.

Newcastle strength also a drawback

The report adds that Barcelona need to reduce their wage bill before they sign any new players. Therefore rumours over Depay’s impending exit do seem to hold more than a grain of truth.

Manchester United have also been linked while Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool have been mentioned in connection with the ex-PSV Eindhoven man.

But Newcastle are now spoken about in the same breath as others in terms of financial power.

However, Howe has the likes of Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and Allan Saint-Maximin on the books.

And, with Miguel Almiron now the first name on the team sheet, Depay would not be guaranteed to start.

That could be a stumbling block for a player who has been marginalised by his present club.

He will not want to swap one bench for another. But a bumper pay packet and the prospect of European football may still sway things in the north east side’s favour.

Depay struggled during 18 months with United before resurrecting his career at Lyon.

He is now a better player than the one that floundered at Old Trafford. And there may be a case that he has unfinished business in the Premier League.
