Newcastle tipped to enter Steven Bergwijn bidding amid claims deal for ex-Liverpool star in works

Steven Bergwijn, Netherlands and Tottenham June 2022

Newcastle could enter the race for Tottenham attacker Steven Bergwijn and also reportedly have a deal to re-sign Georginio Wijnaldum in the works.

The Magpies are looking for a strong summer transfer window after eventually easing relegation concerns. They were in trouble before Eddie Howe came in, but the manager has inspired a turnaround..

Newcastle are now looking upwards as they look to build on what was a season of two vastly different halves.

Centre-back is a key area, with Lille defender Sven Botman a target. According to former Dutch manager Aad de Mos, though, Newcastle should go after his fellow countryman Bergwijn.

The Spurs forward has only had a bit-part role under Antonio Conte and has revealed a desire to move on this summer. Ajax are the current frontrunners for Bergwijn, but De Mos has claimed that the Eredivisie giants feel “divided” over the deal.

“I think Newcastle United, with all the money they have, are also a candidate for him,,” he told Voetbal 4 U.

“He is a substitute player at Tottenham, €30m was paid by Tottenham to PSV. Daniel Levy, the chairman, is a very difficult man to negotiate with.

“I think Ajax are divided as to whether to do it or not, and the danger is that you can fall behind the net for the umpteenth time.”

Indeed, another pundit claimed that a move to Ajax would be a step back for Bergwijn after going from PSV to the Premier League.

Bergwijn could be coupled with Wijnaldum

De Mos further claimed that Newcastle are trying to secure a return for Bergwijn’s international team-mate Wijnaldum.

“By the way, I also think they are trying to get Georginio Wijnaldum back. They also want to join Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool,” the now-analyst said.

Wijnaldum left Newcastle in 2016 to move to Liverpool. He played a huge part in Jurgen Klopp’s success, helping the Reds win the Champions League, Premier League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Bergwijn loss wouldn't be terrible for Spurs

The Dutchman has been in good form recently, but overall wouldn't be a huge miss for Spurs.

The 31-year-old then failed to agree a new contract and moved to Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent in 2021.

However, his spell in the French capital has not worked out so far as planned so far.

Newcastle need strong transfer window

Newcastle definitely need to bolster this summer. Bergwijn and Wijnaldum would be perfect if they can get either, or both, of the players.

Bergwijn needs to look for a new challenge, with Conte seemingly moving forward without him.

However, he has shown he has talent worth playing in the Premier League and would be wise to stay in the English top flight if he can.

Wijnaldum also has a plethora of Premier League experience. He is in greater need of a move elsewhere than Bergwijn.
