Newcastle receive praise for Sven Botman capture as pundit reveals Dutchman’s best attributes

Sven Botman, Lille defender

Danny Murphy has praised Newcastle for signing Sven Botman from Lille and revealed the attributes which will help him to succeed in the Premier League.

Newcastle pursued the centre-back in January but had no luck. Lille did not want to sell while he was playing an integral part of their campaign.

Lille’s stance softened at the end of the season though and AC Milan soon took pole position for Botman.

But Newcastle managed to fight off the reigning Serie A champions to land him, in a major coup for the Tyneside club.

They have paid Lille around £35million to sign the Netherlands U21 international, who has 12 caps to his name so far.

After the announcement of his move, Botman explained why he chose Newcastle as his new club.

“Newcastle had a long-term plan to get to the top, for both me and for the club, and they play in the Premier League which is the best league in Europe,” he said.

“The whole package is just perfect. I’m looking forward now to meeting the fans and also my new team-mates.”

Impressive Sven Botman traits emphasised

Former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Murphy has called it ‘a good signing’. He has also named a couple of traits which should help Botman excel at St James’ Park.

“I think the centre-half Newcastle have signed, Botman, is a good player,” Murphy told the Daily Mirror.

“I think the fans are really going to enjoy him.

“He’s somebody I’ve seen a fair bit of, he’s a footballing centre-half, loves coming out with the ball and a good passer of the ball.

“Very good technically but also has that physical presence that you need as a centre-half. I think the Newcastle fans are going to take to him, that’s a good signing.”

It is certainly an impressive deal from Newcastle. Botman has Champions League experience and will surely make his senior Netherlands debut soon, too.

He is already a composed and reliable defender, despite being just 22. And his age also means the club should be able to rely on him for years.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are reportedly battling three other Prem clubs for the signing of Boubacar Traore.
