Newcastle United have officially confirmed the signing of defender Sven Botman from Lille, to the delight of manager Eddie Howe.

Botman was one of the main names linked with the Magpies following their takeover in October 2021. Indeed, it seemed the signing could happen in January, though nothing came of the interest then.

However, Botman has now officially become Newcastle’s third signing of the summer.

The £35million move has been finalised, and confirmed by the Newcastle United Official Site. Botman is clearly excited to get started at the club.

“I’m really happy – delighted – and I can’t wait to start this new adventure. This is the best day of my life, to sign a contract with Newcastle United. It’s a day I’ve worked hard for and I’m very excited,” he said.

“Newcastle had a long-term plan to get to the top, for both me and for the club, and they play in the Premier League which is the best league in Europe.

“The whole package is just perfect. I’m looking forward now to meeting the fans and also my new team-mates.”

Indeed, Botman is a member of a new era of Newcastle stars. The signing of the Dutchman could inspire more talent to follow him to St James’ Park.

Following their takeover, it is clear that the Magpies’ ambitions are to return to the elite of the Premier League.

Botman is a statement signing, and he will surely prove a good one over the next few seasons.

Newcastle manager Howe is clearly excited to have Botman at the club.

“I’m delighted Sven is joining us. He is technically very good, physically very good and has a great attitude,” he said.

“At 22, he already has solid experience at the top level but he is at a great age to grow with this team. I am looking forward to getting to work with him and seeing him with his new team-mates.”

Indeed, Newcastle will hope that he takes no time at all in getting up to speed, and gelling with his teammates, so the side can climb the table yet again.
