Newcastle holding out hope for big summer signing despite AC Milan deal edging closer

Sven Botman, Kylian Mbappe, Ligue 1, February 2022.

Newcastle are reportedly still hopeful of landing Lille centre-back Sven Botman despite AC Milan seemingly being in the box seat.

The Magpies’ desire to land a top centre-back in January was evident. Indeed, they pursued not only Botman, but Sevilla defender Diego Carlos too.

However, Botman was also a high priority for Newcastle, and Eddie Howe’s side made multiple attempts to sign him.

The St James’ Park outfit were unsuccessful in their pursuit, and Botman remained a Lille player. The Dutchman’s future seems to be away from Lille, though, and AC Milan look to be the most likely destination.

Gazzetta dello Sport have produced an interesting update, however.

The report states that Newcastle ‘have not let go’ in their pursuit of Botman. While Botman seems keen on making a move to Milan, ‘the game isn’t over yet’ for the English side.

Milan have not agreed a fee with Lille yet, so Newcastle’s hopes are still alive.

Furthermore, the Magpies’ recent nine-game unbeaten run in the league could change Botman’s mind over his preferred destination.

Darwin Nunez to join Newcastle in big transfer worth £70m

The higher Howe’s side finish, the more attractive a prospect a move to St James’ Park would be.

As such, Newcastle may still have a chance of luring Botman to the club.

Botman and Rabiot among Newcastle targets

Adrien Rabiot, Juventus, March 2022.

In other news, Newcastle may be in the box seat to land Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot. An update has reinforced how Newcastle could make the easy acquisition.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted recently that Juventus ‘will sign a new central midfielder’.

As such, Rabiot will no doubt slip further down the pecking order.

That being said, Newcastle could swoop for the Frenchman, and the signing would be a simple one.

That’s because Italian outlet Calciomercato report Juve are keen to rid their books of Rabiot’s salary.

The Frenchman was signed when Juventus were splashing the cash freely. Despite having a year left to run on his contract, the Old Lady are actively seeking a sale this summer.
