Breakthrough for Newcastle, with Sven Botman ‘one step away’ from making €45m move after Lille pressure

Sven Botman June 2022

Newcastle United are finally on the verge of a major breakthrough in a key summer pursuit after learning Sven Botman is “one step away” from joining them.

Botman has been identified as a pivotal target for Newcastle in their first summer with Saudi owners. After they added Dan Burn in January, the Dutchman could now join him as an ideal centre-back partner.

It has not been an easy transfer battle for Newcastle, who have had to face competition from AC Milan. For a long time, it appeared the Italian move would be Botman’s preference.

However, Newcastle’s offer to his current club Lille has been superior to what the Serie A champions can muster. Therefore, the tide is now turning in their favour.

Earlier, Gianluca Di Marzio relayed that Lille have been trying to convince Botman to accept terms on offer from Newcastle.

And according to SportItalia, Botman is now “one step away” from joining Newcastle. In fact, it could become official within a matter of hours.

The Italian outlet claims Milan are paying the price for their delays in the pursuit. Instead, Newcastle are about to secure what would be an impressive acquisition.

Elsewhere, Get French Football News claim Lille’s pressure on Botman has paid off. Milan were not willing to go close to Newcastle’s €45m offer, so it is the Premier League side’s bid that will be successful.

In English money, Newcastle would be paying in the region of £38.7m to sign the centre-back.

Newcastle securing key deal for Sven Botman

It could be a good bit of business for an in-demand young player with a good blend of experience and potential. Still only 22, Botman was a member of the Lille squad that won Ligue 1 in 2020-21.

In the season that followed, he played 25 Ligue 1 games as a starter as his side slipped to 10th in the table.

Now, he could become part of a Newcastle project being designed for the opposite trajectory. Eddie Howe guided the club away from relegation danger and into mid-table in the 2021-22 Premier League.

With a few smart additions, Newcastle could be aiming even higher next season. Reinforcing their defence remains a priority – and it appears they could successfully do so with Botman.
