Tanguy Ndombele: Newcastle to pip LaLiga side to shock signing with Eddie Howe ‘hot’ on deal as Tottenham price emerges

Newcastle United are reportedly engineering themselves to the front of the queue to sign Tanguy Ndombele in a shock deal from Tottenham this summer.

The French midfielder arrived at Tottenham in a then club-record £54m move from Lyon, where he had established himself as one of the leading midfielders in Ligue 1. However, despite looking the part in France, his time at Tottenham has not gone to plan.

Indeed, after falling out with first Jose Mourinho and then Antonio Conte, Ndombele was allowed to return to Lyon on loan last January. That deal included an option for his former side to make the move permanent. However, after failing to impress in 11 appearances – together with their difficulties at matching the agreed fee – Ndombele was allowed to return to Spurs.

However, he has no future at the club under Conte. Indeed, he finds himself a long way down the central midfield pecking order. To that end, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp are all ahead of him. And Conte would likely pick another unwanted star in Harry Winks before giving Ndombele another go.

As such, the 25-year-old midfielder is likely to depart the club this summer. As such, a number of clubs are reportedly considering offers, with the likes of Galatasaray and Napoli both linked.  However, the strongest interest has come from Villarreal, who are making his signing from Tottenham a priority.

Alongside another unwanted Spurs star in Giovani Lo Celso, the Yellow Submarine are looking at ways they can finance the double deal.

That would most likely mean a loan-to-buy arrangement as far as Ndombele is concerned.

However, French outlet Media Foot claims it is Newcastle who are now leading the charge.

Indeed, they claim is is Eddie Howe’s side who are ‘most hot on him’.

They state Howe and Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth believe there is a plenty of immense quality still there. And there is something in Ndombele that ‘pleases’ them and would add to their midfield.

Furthermore, they claim that Tottenham would prefer his permanent sale, as opposed another loan deal.

To that end, they write that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is seeking a fee of ‘at least €50m’ (£42.3m).

Whether Newcastle are prepared to go that high remains to be seen.

However, it is quite clear that Ndombele needs a route out of Spurs to kickstart his career.

Until this point, Villarreal were looking like the most likely candidate to sign him.

But their financial position means they may only be able to land one of Ndombele and Lo Celso. And with the latter impressing himself while on loan, the capture of the Argentine seemingly remains their No 1 priority.

The article does insist though that Ndombele knows his time is up. He has no chance of playing for Tottenham again while Conte remains at the helm.

And with the World Cup on the horizon, Ndombele needs a move as a matter of urgency if he is to have any chance of making Didier Deschamps’ squad.

Tanguy Ndombele is finished at Spurs but Tottenham want to make sure his wages are off the books and are willing to talk to Lyon and drop the fee

Tanguy Ndombele has won seven caps for France, the last of those in 2021.

However, his hopes of making the les Bleus’ squad for Qatar have increased following the serious injury sustained by Paul Pogba.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are hot on the trail of Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos, who could be up for grabs for a fee of around £21m.
