Newcastle set for test of appeal after three league champions join race for striker target Hugo Ekitike

Newcastle United are set for one of the biggest tests of how competitive they can be in the transfer market when it comes to their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike.
Reports are now revealing the range of competition Newcastle face for the Reims striker, whom they originally wanted to sign in January. At the time, it looked like it would be an interesting investment for the future.
Indeed, Newcastle’s first transfer window under Saudi ownership saw them avoid a focus on big names as may have been expected of them. Instead, they found useful, experienced reinforcements.
But Ekitike was on their radar as a long-term option to partner the older Chris Wood after his arrival from Burnley. After the window closed, there was an expectation they would be back in for the Frenchman in future.
That has turned out to be the case, although now they are facing several threats to their pursuit. Recent reports indicated their growing frustration at not being able to get a deal over the line.
Ekitike has been on holiday, waiting to decide his future while other clubs are joining the race. Now, Newcastle have learned who they are rivalling for his services.
According to L’Equipe, they have indeed made a “big offer” to sign him from Reims. He has been described as their “priority” target in the current market.
Despite this, Ekitike has also emerged onto the radars of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. The champions of Spain, Germany and France respectively are all “seduced” by his potential.
Ekitike scored 11 goals in 25 games for Reims’ first team last season. He is under contract with his current employers until 2024. They are starting to accept his fate will be that of an exit, though.
Earlier this month, their president revealed they are hoping to gain somewhere between €30m (£25.8m) and €40m (£34.4m) for his transfer. He also admitted it is up to the player and his advisors to make their decision on his next club.
Hugo Ekitike battle a test for new Newcastle era
Now, Newcastle are about to see how much appeal they have in comparison to some of Europe’s biggest clubs. They are aiming to reach a similar standard themselves over time.

Hugo Ekitike would be a great signing for Manchester United
Manchester United have been the latest club to be linked with French youngster Hugo Ekitike.
However, it has been thought that in-demand targets are still likely to lean towards the already established powers, with the exception of a few.
Ekitike’s status has changed from what it was six months ago. He remains a promising talent, but one that many elite clubs are now aware of.
Hence, Newcastle are in for a test that they may not have foreseen half a year ago when it comes to whether they can convince him.
