Newcastle seriously considering Barcelona summer transfer coup despite Catalan giants not playing ball

Newcastle United are reportedly taking a serious interest in bringing a Chelsea old boy back to the Premier League this summer.

Toon chief Eddie Howe is looking to add more quality to his squad this summer, especially if Newcastle can get completely back on track and secure Champions League football for next season.

And one player he appears to have an eye on is versatile Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen.

Spanish publication Sport reports that Newcastle are ready to ‘make a big play’ for the 26-year-old come the end of the current campaign.

The Denmark international has had a promising first campaign in Spain. However, he did take time to embed himself into Xavi’s first team on a regular basis.

Indeed, Christensen has not missed a minute of action in Barca’s last eight LaLiga outings.

To that end, it’s thought that the Catalan giants are unlikely to want to do business this summer, although their current financial status may lead to a different outcome.

And Sport states that Newcastle are ‘the great danger’ to Barcelona’s hopes of keeping Christensen.

Newcastle chasing more statement signings

The Dane would be another statement signing for Howe’s men as they continue to thrive under PIF.

Christensen would bring plenty of Premier League experience with him, having almost made a century of appearances in England’s top flight. He’s also won the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League in his career so far.

Another impressive quality of the defender is his versatility. Christensen can play as a centre-back in a three or as a left wing-back. The former is where he largely starred at Stamford Bridge though.

However, Barcelona are unlikely to make it easy for Newcastle to try and complete a deal.

But at the end of the day, money talks and the St James’ Park outfit have plenty of it. Meanwhile, Barca’s financial plight might give them no option but to cash in – at the right price.

Howe’s men can improve their top-four hopes massively when they host Manchester United on Sunday.

Indeed, victory over the Red Devils will see them jump above them into third place in the Premier League table.
