Newcastle United have two Premier League stars in mind as they look to bolster their goalkeeping ranks, according to reports.
Eddie Howe has Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow in his squad. Dubravka began the season behind his English team-mate but has gone on to start the last 18 Premier League matches.
Between the two shot-stoppers, they have conceded 54 goals in 30 matches. Newcastle’s defensive frailty was on show during the 5-1 thrashing at Tottenham on Sunday.
The Magpies enjoyed an impressive first half and went in at 1-1. But a second-half capitulation saw Spurs hit four goals, with Heung-min Son and Steven Bergwijn among those on the scoresheet.
Dubravka couldn’t do much to keep Newcastle in the match as Antonio Conte’s attackers tore his defence apart.
However, it seems Howe still wants to bring a new keeper to St James’ Park ready for next season.
Newcastle target Brighton, Chelsea players
According to recent reports, Newcastle are considering a move for Brighton and Spain’s Robert Sanchez.
They are willing to table an opening offer worth £20million once the summer transfer window gets underway. This could be enough to tempt Brighton into a deal.
Sanchez is not the only shot-stopper wanted on Tyneside. Sport Witness, who cite reports in Spain, reveal he is joined on Newcastle’s transfer wish list by Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The 27-year-old, a compatriot of Sanchez, is firmly behind Edouard Mendy in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
He has made 15 appearances so far this term, with just four of those coming in the Premier League.
Arrizabalaga came off the bench in the Carabao Cup final ready for the penalty shoot-out. But he didn’t manage to save any spot-kicks and went on to miss his own, gifting Liverpool the trophy.
Sport Witness claim Arrizabalaga’s time at Chelsea could come to an end this summer. That’s because Howe ‘likes him a lot’.
One sticking point is Chelsea’s transfer ban. They cannot sell players or agree new contracts due to sanctions on owner Roman Abramovich.
This will need to be sorted out before Newcastle can come in with an official bid for Arrizabalaga.
