Newcastle have big-time rivals, but they are ‘very serious’ over free-transfer coup

Matthias Ginter Borussia Monchengladbach December 2021

Newcastle are “very serious” about landing Liverpool and Bayern Munich target Matthias Ginter, claims a report.

The Borussia Monchengladbach defender is out of contract in the summer and wants to leave the Bundesliga club. Last week the 27-year-old confirmed his time was up “after a long period of reflection”.

“I have decided to follow another path in my career,” said the Germany international in December.

A statement which stung Bayern Munich into action. It’s no surprise that Ginter emerged on Bayern’s radar after developing into one of the best centre-backs in the Bundesliga.

Ginter has also been capped 46 times and Catalan outlet El Nacional, claimed Ginter is leaning towards joining Bayern Munich next summer.

The Monchengladbach man is already in “advanced talks” with Bayern officials. And it would take an enticing offer from Newcastle to turn the players head.

But the Bavarian giants face a “challenge” from the Magpies, according to Inter Live.

They suggest Inter are trying to negotiate a free-transfer deal for the defender. However, they report that Eddie Howe’s side and the German champions are ‘very serious’ about the player.

They also acknowledge that it will be “difficult for a German to say no to Bayern”.

Newcastle, under new ownership from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, do have the muscle to match Bayern. They would also guarantee Ginter a starting role, but the problem they have is the threat of relegation hanging over their heads.

Inter have reportedly proposed a four-year deal worth €3m a season, which equates to around £48,000 a week. That is unlikely to entice Ginter, who can expect to double that.

FC Inter News have previously touted Liverpool as suitors for Ginter. Jurgen Klopp is not in desperate need for centre-backs after Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez all returned to fitness.

The Reds also landed Ibrahima Konate in the summer and seem well stocked for defensive cover.
