RB Leipzig attacker Dominik Szoboszlai has added fuel to the rumours linking him with a move to Newcastle United this summer.

The 22-year-old is regarded as one of the best talents in the Bundesliga and is expected to improve. So, he could be an excellent long-term investment for the Magpies.

Eddie Howe has admitted that he wants to bring in ‘elite’ players this summer, as they prepare for life in the Champions League.

Indeed, Newcastle have had a fantastic season. They currently sit third in the Premier League table – on track for their best campaign since 2003.

As a result, Howe and Dan Ashworth are expected to make several new additions in the transfer market.

One of the areas they seem to be focusing on is midfield. For instance, as revealed by TEAMtalk, they are firmly in the race for James Maddison of relegation-bound Leicester.

But, Szoboszlai is another of their key targets. So, it will be interesting to see if they are willing to meet his £61m release clause this summer.

Szoboszlai hints at Leipzig departure

Now, in an interview with German outlet BildSzoboszlai has fuelled the rumours about a potential departure from Leipzig this summer.

When asked about the rumours, he said: “I don’t deal with that.”

But, when pressed on whether he would ‘definitely’ stay at Leipzig for another season, Szoboszlai added: “I didn’t say that.

“I’m definitely still with RB Leipzig for three games. I’d like to play in the Champions League and win my second trophy with RB Leipzig. We’ll see what happens after the summer.”

The German side currently sit in third place in the Bundesliga table. So, they are on track to qualify for the Champions League – but nothing is guaranteed, yet.

Bild claim in their report that Newcastle scouts have watched Szoboszlai ‘several times.’ But, they are not the only interested club, with Chelsea also in the race for his signature.

However, given Newcastle look set to be playing Champions League football next season, St James’ Park is looking like Szoboszlai’s most likely destination – if he does leave Leipzig.

The Hungary international’s contract with the German club is valid until 2026. However, if Newcastle meet his £61m release clause, Leipzig will be powerless to stop him leaving.

Given Szoboszlai has refused to rule out a summer exit, this is definitely a story to watch out for when the transfer window opens.
