£125m Liverpool target confirms Man Utd tried to sign him in summer

Inaki Williams has confirmed he received an approach from Manchester United over the summer.

The Athletic Club Bilbao forward was linked with United in the summer, while Liverpool are also understood to have been registered an interest in the player.

Spanish TV station El Chiringuito suggested that the forward, with a reputation as one of the fastest players in Europe, could be a due a move to Old Trafford in the summer.

The forward has long been linked with Liverpool with manager Jurgen Klopp a long-term admirer of the Spain international, who was mooted as a potential signing prior to their capture of Mohamed Salah in the summer of 2017.

Williams, 25, who signed a new deal in Bilbao until 2028 with a £125m release clause, has said United did try and sign him.

“I had contact from Manchester United but I cannot tell you who it was,” Williams told Cadena Ser.

“My number one option has always been to stay at Athletic Club and to retire here. Joining Real Sociedad? No, I could never go there. 100%.”

Williams has scored one goal in three games this season on the back of 15 goals last season.
