£63m former Jurgen Klopp target getting the boot in LaLiga

Former Liverpool and Arsenal transfer target Thomas Lemar is set for a January move away from Atletico Madrid.

The former Monaco winger was a long-term target of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp in 2017, indeed Liverpool were snubbed several times in their attempts to land the player that summer.

However it was Arsenal who were closest to signing the France international on deadline day in summer 2017 – but had a £92million offer rebuffed by the Ligue 1 club.

Instead the winger waited 12 months and agreed a move to join Atletico Madrid for £63m.

But his time in LaLiga has not gone well. The 24-year-old has only managed three goals and six assists in 61 appearances and this season he is yet to score or assist in 13 appearances.

And according to France Football, coaching staff in the Spanish capital have decided they do not want to work with the player. The Atleti board are also intent on offloading the player and are already seeking to line up a move for Valencia attacker Rodrigo to replace him.

Whether Liverpool boss Klopp remains interested in Lemar is unlikely with Atleti most probably looking to recoup most of their outlay for the player.

However, Lemar will not be easy to sell after a woeful 18-month spell and they may well have to offer him on a loan deal with an option to buy at the end.
