Aberdeen bid to tackle gulls

The birds have never been far away from a ground that is within one good toe-punt of the North Sea, but supporters have been expressing growing concerns over the problem recently, particularly after the Europa League qualifiers against FK Shkendija and Rijeka.

At this time of year, herring gulls often become over-protective of their young who are now leaving the nests.

The Premiership club have hired a specialist eradication firm, who employ a hawk to clear the stadium before matches and use audible repellents.

Aberdeen said in a statement: “Currently, there is no nesting in and around the actual stadium buildings, however we cannot control this outwith our boundary with birds that are nesting in and around the flats around the stadium.

“For obvious reasons we cannot fly birds of prey during games. Gulls are very intelligent birds and will always gather where a large crowd of people are and where food is consumed.

“We will continue to do all we can to combat this issue and ensure the match-day experience is a positive one for supporters.”

Coincidentally, Aberdeen’s next fixture is goalkeeper Jamie Langfield’s testimonial on Sunday against Brighton and Hove Albion… nicknamed the Seagulls.
