Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has reminded his employers that his contractual situation “will have to be solved” before the end of the season.

The Spaniard moved to Anfield in the summer of 2019, as a replacement for the departing Simon Mignolet. However, he immediately had a telling role, starring in the UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea. Furthermore, he went on to play 11 Premier League games last term amid injury to Alisson Becker.

This season, however, he temporarily dropped further down the pecking order to third-choice stopper.

Irishman Caoimhin Kelleher stepped up, impressing with Champions League and Premier League debuts in a standout week.

As such, with Adrian heading into the final few months of his contract, uncertainty has arisen over his future.

Speaking to Marca, the 34-year-old insisted that he wants a new deal with Jurgen Klopp‘s team. However, he admitted that several stumbling blocks remain.

“Good question,” he said when asked about his future plans. “I have just signed a contract and I am happy in Liverpool. Since I arrived they welcomed me with open arms.

“It has been a step forward in my career, not only for winning titles, but for being in a great team and training daily with the best in the world.I am happy here.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits his side didn't do enough to win against Real Madrid and was critical of the referee after the game.

“It is true that this second season personally has been quite irregular. The club has made me see that they are happy with me. We are in talks, but nothing is clear yet.

“It will have to be solved between now and the end of the season. The most important thing is to remain happy and enjoy this profession.

“I would like to continue here, but there are quite a few points to clarify and make the best decision for all parties.”

Speaking about Kelleher’s rise this season, Adrian said that he has full respect for his former stopper.

“It is being an atypical and irregular season, also on a personal level,” he said.

“The coach put Kelleher ahead of me in December, but it’s part of our job. We are three good goalkeepers.

“Physically I feel good, like a bull, and I face the final stretch of the course with the greatest enthusiasm.”
