Sunderland have signed Adam Matthews from Celtic and Sebastian Coates on a permanent deal from Liverpool so far this summer and are now looking to strengthen their options in the final third.

The Black Cats are reported to be in talks with Zenit Saint Petersburg and Dynamo Kiev over the signings of Nicolas Lombaerts and Jeremain Lens respectively and, although nothing is believed to be imminent with either player, Advocaat is confident of adding to his squad before the end of the club’s US tour in a fortnight.

He told the Sunderland Echo: “We will definitely have some more by then (the time they return from North America) or there is something wrong.

“But then on the other hand, If I cannot get the right players, I don’t buy them.

“I don’t like to waste money.

“I’m looking for players that I know will make the team better. That’s it, not the same level, a little bit better.

“I buy players for a certain position, because I know what I want.”

One player not in Advocaat’s thoughts is Vergini, who the Black Cats were forced to sign on a permanent £2million deal after he made more than 20 Premier League appearances on loan last season.

With Academy graduate Tom Beadling progressing towards the first team, the Argentine could make a quick exit out of the Stadium of Light.

Advocaat said: “It’s a new season and I have to be straight and honest with people.

“I don’t want to go on with him, with all respect.

“The problem I have is Tom Beadling, who is a promising young player.

“He’s a member of the squad now, although I might have to loan him out.

“But I think he can do something.

“I’m sorry for Santi, but he has to go and find another club.”
