Agent in agreement as Salah contract situation put in sharp Liverpool focus

The agent of Mohamed Salah has agreed that the forward is a Liverpool legend in what was perhaps another reminder to the club of his need for a new contract.

Salah has been a sensation since his 2017 move from Roma to Liverpool. After rebuilding his career in Italy, the Egyptian not only proved his Premier League doubters wrong, but reached a whole new level with his goalscoring exploits. Now into his fifth season at Anfield, he is cementing his reputation among the club’s all-time greats.

On Saturday, Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal in the Liverpool shirt. It continued his fine start to the season, which has brought six goals from seven games already. After being Liverpool’s top scorer in each of his seasons there so far, he looks a strong candidate to repeat that feat for a fifth consecutive year.

But there have always been fears in the background about how much longer Salah’s spell in a red shirt will last. He has repeatedly been linked with a move to one of the big clubs on the continent. And at the age of 29, he knows his next decision could be the last major one he makes in his glittering career.

Liverpool will be keen to ensure his association with them continues. However, his contract is due to expire in 2023. If they cannot tie him down to longer terms, they would be at risk of losing him for a cut-price fee – or nothing at all. After seeing Georginio Wijnaldum walk away for free this year, they would not want to lose another key man in similar fashion in two years’ time.

Thus, talks will be ongoing to extend Salah’s deal. Although, Jurgen Klopp recently admitted there was no news about his contract situation.

He's not going anywhere anytime soon. And I'd bet my life on that.

Liverpool generally neglected the opportunity to make signings in the summer – barring Ibrahima Konate – in favour of getting their key players to commit to longer stays. They would be hoping Salah is the next to do so, but there hasn’t been much progress.

His agent has been issuing gentle reminders about his importance to Liverpool for a while. Now, he has given another subtle but telling message about Salah.

Agent gives one-word Salah message

Responding to a tweet from Optus Sport that read: “Liverpool FC has existed for 129 years. No Reds player has ever gotten to 100 top-flight goals quicker than Mo Salah. Not Gerrard, not Torres, not Suarez, not Fowler. No one. The Egyptian King is already a bonafide Anfield legend”, Ramy Abbas Issa replied: “Yep”.

It is not the first time he has made such a remark on social media. He previously wrote, “I hope they’re watching” when the former Chelsea man opened his account for the season against Norwich City in August. That appeared to be a message to the Liverpool hierarchy over the new terms he deserves.

As things stand, there are still plenty of talks to be had before Salah can sign his new contract. Though it seems a priority issue for all parties.

Salah’s record with Liverpool in all competitions reads 210 appearances, 131 goals and 49 assists. Even when his fellow attackers were struggling somewhat last year, he maintained his usual levels with 31 goals. It was the second best return of his career.

His agent will be keen to see him rewarded appropriately and there has been talk of demands of £500,000 per week. That may cast doubt on the chances of a new deal, but there does at least appear to be an acknowledgement of his connection with Liverpool.
