The agent of Mesut Ozil has revealed that he has spoken to “at least five” of his client’s Arsenal teammates who feel shocked at the midfielder’s fall from grace.
Ozil has proved the subject of intense debate this week after his snub from the Gunners’ Premier League squad.
Indeed, paired with his absence from the Europa League ranks, it means his only chance at football in the coming months is for the club’s Under-23s squad.
The German spoke out strongly against his snub, claiming that Arsenal have not “reciprocated” his loyalty. In response, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said that he had “failed” his player and regretted the situation.
However, Ozil’s agent has rejected Arteta’s explanation, demanding an “honest” response from the Spaniard.
“Arsenal fans deserve an honest explanation, not [Arteta] saying, ‘I failed Ozil’,” Erkut Sogut told ESPN.
“You didn’t fail Ozil. You failed to be fair, honest and transparent and treat someone with respect who has a contract and was loyal all the time.
“Every single person outside knows he hasn’t treated him fairly. He didn’t give him a chance to show himself this season. If he is still under contract, the player should have the option to stay and fight for his place.
“Mesut hasn’t been given that. Why would you put a player on the bench twice for 90 minutes [against Brighton and Crystal Palace in June] if he wasn’t fit or committed?”
Sogut went on to claim to reveal an inside perspective on the matter from within the Arsenal camp.
‘Arsenal should tell the truth’
“Everyone says he’s training well. Per Mertesacker said this publicly. I spoke with at least five teammates who say he is training great,” the agent added.
“They say Mesut is one of their best players, and they cannot understand why he is left out. So it can’t be the training. If it is not the pitch, what are the footballing reasons?
“If you talk, you should tell the truth that the Arsenal fans deserve, otherwise don’t talk at all.”
Influential agent Kia Joorabchian, who is heavily involved with Arsenal’s dealings, has also spoken out about the situation.
